Ants Among Elephants is a project of a young and talented musician Caleb Wilgus from Lynchburg, Virginia. His music can best be described as a mixture of indie  and alt rock with psychedelic vibes. Wilgus self released his latest EP, The Wisest Aunt Telling The Saddest Tale, on May 15, 2018. It comprises of tales of love and personal burdens.

The musician himself wrote, recorded, produced and mixed all music and lyrics on the short album.  Four songs on the EP are extraordinary in the way of conveying the whole range of emotions in just 15 minutes, making one shudder. Wilgus has a fantastic voice and he sings with passion. The short album begins with the single Feel. This is the most indie rock song from between all four, even uplifting, as it tells a love story. It’s as simple as that. Yet at the same time a simple love story can mean much more to the one who has experienced it.

There is some level of truthfulness, naturalness and authenticity in Caleb Wilgus’s voice and in his writing style. This is what makes Ants Among Elephants so distinct from other alternative rock / indie-psych artists and bands: these lyrics, sometimes light, sometimes quite upsetting, make one feel something. Either a simple love song like Feel,  much more darker Break, about struggling with depression,  a slow and sad song He or She, which describes family-related issues, all of it speak to the core. When he sings, one can hear love, passion, a kind of grief, sadness and bits of rage. It surely leaves one in awe.

As for the instrumental part of the EP, Wilgus definitely composed very fine songs. They might not be actual masterpieces (although who knows?), but given the circumstances – it is self made record after all – that is exactly what makes them stand out. Their lo-fi, raw sound and seeming simplicity, mashed up with a kind of strange melancholy, create the feeling of the aforementioned naturalness. One can wonder how incredible the songs would sound if played by a full band, but for this particular one man band, they are truly captivating.

Listening to The Wisest Aunt Telling The Saddest Tale is an intense experience. It can brighten up one’s mood, and all of a sudden, hit one with a sad and almost heartbreaking stories. Ants Among Elephants created a very authentic and fascinating record. What remains, is the anticipation for more songs. One can keep his/her fingers crossed for the band’s further development.
